1. International Workshop Agriculture Data Dictionary

On 1st and 2nd of February 2005 we will hold a workshop about 'The International, Internet-based Data Dictionary for Agriculture ' in Düsseldorf. The workshop is organised by the EDI-Agrar-Koordinationgremium Germany (residing in BFL)in cooperation with EAV Netherlands and the Task Force International Data Dictionary from ISO/TC23/SC19.

RESULTS

The Workshop showed the need of an international, internet based data dictionary for agriculture. It was supported to install a server at ISO/TC23/SC19 for all three working groups. Therefore a working group will produce a meta data model until May, 2005. Lateron this group will discuss the needed web applications. It was also discussed to start an initiative for the development of a great international data dictionary for animal production. There will be started a mailing list mailto:IDD4LIVESTOCK@bfl-online.de. More about the results result.pdf

Motivation

If you look at the machines on the farm, there is a big volume of interesting data, which can be used to automatically generate informations for different targets. The data is there, but it is not really available. Sometimes it is available for ISOBUS, but not for ISOagriNET. The development of ISOBUS and ISOagriNET is advanced, but we want to produce gateways between these standards. It is much easier to do that with one commonly used data dictionary. Locomotives have to change their track gauge on borders. ISOagriNET can only work globally, if it works with one international data dictionary. The actual international data dictionary for stationary equipment was produced with extravagant expenses. The results are very small. There are only a few items and entities in the international data dictionary. Communicating over ISOagriNET will only be successful, if the underlying data dictionary can be used globally and covers all demands. Even new strategies like AGROXML can only be successful, if there is a solid gateway between the standards. We need a procedure, which develops the dictionary content very quickly, just in time with the actual demands. The production of a data dictionary is a small step forward. But this small step is the pre-condition for many steps to follow.

Goals

1 Harmonisation

Find access to cooperative development of one international data dictionary for agriculture *a.harmonise the dictionary items in communication between different partners *b.harmonise items between ISOBUS, ISOagriNET and animal registration *c.harmonise data communication in the field, in the barn, in the slaughterhouse and by the government by means of using the same data dictionary - develop one basic data dictionary for different communication services

2 Realise a flexible, dynamic but nevertheless absolutely reliable procedure for organising the dictionary content

3 Synergy effects and better services for farmers, developers ...

*a. develop an application for cooperative , internet-based maintenance of the data dictionary for a virtual working group in the internet *b. develop a service for automatic production of schemes for different protocols out of the data dictionary *c. develop an engine for on-the-fly-conversion of data streams into any other standard *d. develop a web interface and a web service for quick retrievals from the data dictionary

4 Start of practical initiatives

The workshop is a good opportunity to link different initiatives. The WG2 of ISO/TC23/SC19 wants to start the developement of a broad international data dictionary for animal production. We want to discuss and submit the procedure and find out who can be responsible for the organisation of this work
